Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gather My Supplies
First, I gather all my equipment on the kitchen table. I lay out the birdseed, gelatin packets, water, mixing bowl, cookie cutters, parchment paper, baking sheet, string, measuring cups, spoon, and optional mold. It’s a colorful setup!
Step 2: Prepare the Gelatin
I start by measuring 1/4 cup of cold water and pouring it into my mixing bowl. Then, I sprinkle 2 tablespoons of gelatin over the water and let it sit for a couple of minutes to bloom. The anticipation is building!
Step 3: Combine Gelatin and Water
Once the gelatin has soaked up the water, I heat it gently in the microwave for about 20 seconds until it’s completely dissolved. I take it out, and the warm, gooey mixture smells a bit like marshmallows!
Step 4: Mix in the Birdseed
Next, I measure about 2 cups of birdseed and add it to the gelatin mixture. I grab my spoon and dive in, mixing it all together until every seed is coated. It's starting to look like a festive birdseed concoction!
Step 5: Shape the Ornaments
Now comes the fun part! I place my parchment paper on the baking sheet and grab my cookie cutters. I fill each cookie cutter with the birdseed mixture, pressing down firmly to pack it in tight. I can’t wait to see the shapes!
Step 6: Add String for Hanging
Before the mixture sets, I cut pieces of string or twine, and I press one end into the top of each filled cookie cutter, ensuring it will hold my ornament up later. This step really adds a personal touch!
Step 7: Let the Ornaments Dry
I let the filled cookie cutters sit at room temperature for several hours until they're completely dry and hard. I use some plastic wrap to cover them, keeping them safe from kitchen mishaps.
Step 8: Remove from Molds
Once they are nice and firm, I gently press the bottoms of the cookie cutters to pop the birdseed ornaments out. They look adorable! I can see the seeds all glistening in the light!
Step 9: Decorate and Display
Finally, I find a nice tree or bush in my backyard and hang my beautiful birdseed ornaments. I can't wait to see the local birds flock to my creations! It feels so rewarding to know I’ve made something special for them.
